Switch roller devices

Switch rollers make safe point changeovers possible. Compared to lubricated slide chair base plates without a roller system, they reduce the actuating power that is required tremendously, help to protect the environment and reduce maintenance and servicing costs.

Our switch rollers devices

During the point setting procedure, the switch rails move over slide chairs or slide plates. For points without switch rollers, lubrication is used to reduce friction between these elements. However, environmental factors such as pollution or extreme temperatures can impair the efficiency of these lubricants. Depending on the lubrication and weather conditions, the point drive will need to apply different amounts of force to position the switch rail. In the worst-case scenario, pollution or lack of lubrication can even cause the point to block and consequently fail.

The switch rollers from CDP Rail Systems ensure that the point switch can be repositioned without lubrication. This completely removes the need for time-consuming lubrication of the slide chairs during maintenance, which significantly reduces the amount of effort required to maintain the railway points. The personnel and lubrication material costs are therefore reduced over the long term. The low-friction rolling also reduces the actuating power required to move the railway points by up to 60%, which results in significant energy savings during operation.

There are two different versions of the point system. A fixture with two rollers is used at the front of the point, since this is where the switch has to travel the furthest. Due to the short travel distance, only one roller is required for the rear part of the railway point. The rollers themselves are corrosion-resistant and made of high-strength materials to minimise the effects of weather and wear. CDP Rail Systems provides 2 different solutions for switch rollers.

Your questions - Our answers

Do the rollers need to be lubricated at regular intervals?

No, the rollers of the switch rollers developed by CDP are lubricated for life and also have very good dry running properties. Regular maintenance of the bearings is therefore not necessary, which contributes considerably towards cost savings on maintenance.

Are training courses also available on how to assemble switch rollers properly?

Yes, CDP Rail Systems also provides on-site training for its customers. This training will involve instructing employees about the design and functioning of the switch roller. Instruction will also be provided on how to correctly install the roller and which points need to be considered when conducting an inspection. Our contact partners are always on hand to answer any further questions you may have regarding our training courses.

How often does the switch roller need to be inspected?

The inspection intervals vary considerably depending on where the switch roller is deployed. CDP Rail Systems provides detailed instructions on how to service and inspect the switch roller. An inspection will be carried out either every 6 or 12 months, depending on the load on the switch fixture. If damage to a roller is discovered during an inspection, the affected parts can be replaced in a short time frame via CDP Rail Systems.

How long is the payback time for a switch roller?

It is not possible to make a definitive statement about the payback time, since it depends on many factors and differs depending on where the switch roller is deployed. However, switch rollers from CDP Rail Systems have decisive benefits:

  • Low wear and tear of the point components
  • Energy savings due to reduced actuating forces
  • No maintenance costs thanks to lubrication-free properties

The cost of servicing is therefore significantly reduced. Downtimes as a result of malfunctions or repair measures are also minimised thanks to the outstanding reliability of our switch rollers.

Which solutions are available from CDP Rail Systems with regard to rollers?

We offer the right solution for both the integrated (IRV) and the clip-on switch roller (ARV) in accordance with the application area. Our portfolio for rollers includes products with the following properties:

  • Infinitely variable height adjustment and fixed height adjustment
  • For slide chair heights of 30, 33, 38 with and without inclination
  • Fixtures with one or two rollers
